Superintendent's Award Winner Jung Taeja Says, "The Best Thing I Did Was to Start Studying"
Among the students of Yangsan Baeksehakdang, operated by Yangsan City in Gyeongnam, nine individuals (five in the poetry-painting category and four in the postcard category) were honored at the "2024 National and Gyeongnam Adult Literacy Education Poetry-Painting Exhibition," held in May under the theme "Literacy, Bringing the Whole World Closer." The awards included the Gyeongnam Superintendent of Education Award (1 recipient), the President of the National Institute for Lifelong Education Award (1 recipient), and the President of the Gyeongnam Talent and Lifelong Education Promotion Institute Award (7 recipients).
In the poetry-painting category (5 recipients): ▲ Jeong Taeja (age 65, Yangju-dong Administrative Welfare Center, Secondary Level 1) received the "Gyeongnam Superintendent of Education Award (Second Prize);" ▲ Eom Sunrye (age 63, Mulgeum-eup Administrative Welfare Center, Elementary Level 3) received the "Gyeongnam Talent and Lifelong Education Promotion Institute Award (Touching Writing Award);" ▲ Kim Chunsuk (age 81, Ungsang General Social Welfare Center, Secondary Level 2) and Jeong Hyohee (age 68, Ungsang General Social Welfare Center, Secondary Level 3) both received the "Gyeongnam Talent and Lifelong Education Promotion Institute Award (Happy Writing Award);" and ▲ Yoo Haeun (age 72, Ungsang General Social Welfare Center, Elementary Level 3) received the "Gyeongnam Talent and Lifelong Education Promotion Institute Award (Hopeful Writing Award)."

View original imageJeong Taeja, who won the Gyeongnam Superintendent of Education Award with her original poetry-painting titled "The Best Thing I've Ever Done," said, "I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn literacy education, and I gained courage and pride from achieving such a good result at the poetry-painting exhibition. The best thing I've ever done is definitely starting to study!"
Kim Geumsun, who wrote a letter to her daughter under the theme "I'm Not Ashamed Anymore" and won the President of the National Institute for Lifelong Education Award in the national postcard category, shared, "Thanks to Baeksehakdang, I learned to read and write and now feel the joy of literacy, which makes my life much more enjoyable. I am grateful to everyone."
Mayor Na Dongyeon stated, "I am very proud that the works, in which our seniors honestly expressed their life stories, achieved such outstanding results at the poetry-painting exhibition. We will continue to support our seniors so they can freely express their thoughts in writing and communicate with the world through literacy education."
Since 2010, Yangsan City has been operating Yangsan Baeksehakdang to provide learning opportunities for seniors who have not attained elementary or secondary education. This year, about 230 people are participating in 24 classes at Baeksehakdang.
