Bangladesh Begins Forming Interim Government... "Nobel Laureate Yunus to Lead"
In Bangladesh, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign due to anti-government protests, the president and local leaders have begun establishing a transitional government.
According to local Bangladeshi media on the 6th (local time), President Mohammed Shahabuddin held an emergency meeting with the military and opposition leaders the previous day and decided to immediately form a transitional government. It was also decided to release all those arrested during the protests, including former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, a key opposition leader.
Bangladesh, which adopts a cabinet responsibility system, grants the prime minister substantial authority. The president usually performs symbolic duties but can lead state affairs as the head of state in emergencies.
Earlier, Prime Minister Hasina fled abroad amid escalating bloodshed in the anti-government protests, and Army Chief of Staff Waker Uz Zaman announced Hasina's resignation. The meeting was held just hours after the military declared it would form a transitional government.
Accordingly, President Shahabuddin dissolved the 12th parliament, formed through the general election in January, and paved the way for a new election.
The presidential office stated in a press release that the dissolution of parliament was made after discussions with the chiefs of the three military branches, party leaders, representatives of civic groups, and leaders of student organizations leading the protests.
The student leadership that led the protests also held a press conference late the previous day, stating that they would present their opinions on the formation of the transitional government within 24 hours after meeting with party officials.
