Changwon Special Mayor Hong Nam-pyo Orders Thorough Prevention of Heat-related Illnesses at Executive Meeting Amid Heatwave
"The heatwave continues. Special attention and care are needed for those working on-site, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups."
Changwon Special City Mayor Hong Nam-pyo gave these instructions during an executive meeting on the 2nd.
Mayor Hong also emphasized, "We must make every effort in on-site inspections and promoting health guidelines to prevent any further cases of heat-related illnesses."
Addressing the Department of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Mayor Hong said, "We have achieved a significant accomplishment by being selected for the 'Jinhae Myeongdong District' marine tourism and leisure project." He added, "This project aims to build various infrastructure such as marine leisure experience facilities and healing roads. We must prepare to create synergy by comprehensively linking this project with others in the vicinity, such as the development of Myeongdong Marina."
In particular, Mayor Hong mentioned his recent business trip to Japan with the city council for urban regeneration benchmarking, saying, "On the first day, I walked along the Yokohama waterfront, and I noticed that the public accessibility to the sea was very well ensured, allowing anyone to easily approach the water."
He continued, "Although Changwon has the sea, as the saying goes, it lacks accessible beaches. In places like Jinhae Bay or Masan Bay, there are very few walkable distances. I gained a lot of inspiration on how to strengthen the connectivity of Changwon's limited coastline. We need to reflect these ideas in ongoing projects such as the Masan Bay Grand Design study to bring about real change."
He also said, "In Tokyo, I visited Roppongi and the metropolitan government building, and I strongly felt that Japan is also facing a shrinking society. In such times, the concept of a compact city, which makes cities sustainable by concentrating and organically connecting functions, is important. Seeing it firsthand, Japan seems to have implemented this concept well."
Mayor Hong instructed, "To apply the compact city concept in Changwon, we need places where various complex cultural functions can be integrated at once. For this, it is important for us to plan, ease regulations, and create conditions for private capital to invest and develop. I ask the Urban Policy Bureau to reflect these aspects and proceed with tasks such as revising district unit plans."
