Reported Removed in Airstrike on 13th of Last Month
The Israeli military confirmed on the 1st (local time) that Hamas military leader Muhammad Deif (59) died in an airstrike last month.
According to the Times of Israel and others, the Israeli military announced in a statement that it had obtained information confirming the death of Deif, the commander of Hamas' military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades.
Yoav Gallant, Israel's Defense Minister, also posted on X (formerly Twitter), "On July 13, we killed the murderer Muhammad Deif, known as the 'Bin Laden of Gaza'." The Al-Qassam Brigades led the surprise attack on southern Israel by the Palestinian armed faction Hamas last October.
Minister Gallant described Deif's death as "a significant advancement in eradicating Hamas and achieving the war objectives," adding, "The precise operation was made possible through cooperation between the military and Shin Bet (the domestic intelligence agency)."
On the 13th of last month, the Israeli military bombed the "humanitarian zone" in Khan Yunis, a city in southern Gaza, to eliminate Deif and other Hamas commanders. This area is known to have been crowded with Palestinian refugees. The Gaza Ministry of Health claimed that at least 90 Palestinians were killed and 300 injured in the attack involving five large bombs dropped by the Israeli military.
