Yeongyang County Selected as an Ecotourism Destination by the Ministry of Environment... 'Yeongyang Night Sky and Firefly Park'
Yeongyang Night Sky and Firefly Park has been selected as the “Ecotourism Destination of the Month for August,” a title awarded monthly by the Ministry of Environment.
Designated as an ecotourism area by the Ministry of Environment in 2018, Yeongyang Night Sky and Firefly Park includes the Wangpicheon River Basin Ecological Landscape Conservation Area and the Yeongyang International Dark Sky Park. This region is highly valued for its ecological significance, offering pristine night skies for stargazing.
Notably, it was the first in Asia to be designated as an International Dark Sky Park, maintaining the Silver Tier status. The area is also home to the country’s largest firefly habitat in Suha Village and features the Firefly Ecological Park centered around Suha Valley, a tributary of the Wangpicheon River, making it a prominent ecotourism destination.
Ecotourism experience programs in Yeongyang County include solar sunspot observation, light pollution and space travel education, and VR experiences at the Firefly Observatory and Star Ecology Experience Center. At the Youth Training Center, visitors can also enjoy Challenge Town, quick flight, and curved zipline activities.
County Governor O Dochang stated, “As the only place in the country where fireflies and stars have been elevated as ecotourism resources, visitors can experience the breathtaking sight of the Milky Way and the mesmerizing dance of fireflies under the dark night sky?a memory that will last forever. During the day, guests can explore the nation-level ecological and cultural trails, making this a perfect place for modern people to find a moment of rest during the summer vacation season.”
The “Ecotourism Destination of the Month for August” will be featured on the Ministry of Environment’s YouTube channel, where viewers can watch a five-minute video introducing Yeongyang’s ecotourism area and its surrounding ecological resources.
