The eco-friendly street vacuum cleaner, introduced last year by the district for effective street cleaning, has recently proven its worth as unauthorized littering, such as coffee cups, has increased due to the hot weather.
The 'eco-friendly street vacuum cleaner' is a vacuum suction cleaner designed as a 'portable vacuum cleaner' that environmental officers can easily pull around. With powerful suction, it efficiently collects trash and reduces the labor intensity of street cleaning during the hot summer compared to traditional equipment like brooms and handcarts.
In particular, it can safely and cleanly collect difficult-to-clean pet waste and debris, as well as glass shards and sharp objects that could potentially cause accidents during collection.
The district prioritizes deploying the 'eco-friendly street vacuum cleaner' in high foot traffic areas such as Dangsan-dong, Yeongdeungpo Station, and Yeouido Station. These areas frequently experience unauthorized dumping of cigarette butts, disposable cups, and illegal flyers, resulting in numerous complaints.
One environmental officer shared, "I used to suffer from shoulder and back pain after long hours of broom cleaning, but thanks to the 'eco-friendly street vacuum cleaner,' it has become much easier."
Additionally, the district explained that using the 'eco-friendly street vacuum cleaner' to clean rainwater drains clogged with fallen leaves greatly contributes to preventing flood damage.
The efforts for a 'Clean Yeongdeungpo' do not stop there. The district is actively utilizing 1,445 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to intensively monitor 47 habitual illegal dumping sites.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, "We introduced the 'eco-friendly street vacuum cleaner' to ensure clean street cleaning and improve the working environment of environmental officers. Since cleaning administration is fundamental to daily administration, we will carefully oversee and do our best to create a clean Yeongdeungpo-gu."
