Zuckerberg "Angry About Closed Platforms"... Targets Apple in Conversation with Jensen Huang
"Mobile Era Belongs to Apple, Next Generation is Open Source"
Jensen Huang Exchanges Coats, Showing Warm Interaction
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, presented his philosophy on open-source platforms in the AI era, targeting Apple's closed platform.
On the 29th (local time), during a conversation with Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, at the computer graphics conference 'SIGGRAPH 2024,' Zuckerberg said, "I get angry when talking about closed platforms," adding, "While Apple seemed to have won in the mobile era, in the next generation of computing, open ecosystems will win and take the lead."
This statement came as Zuckerberg expressed the difficulties he experienced during the mobile era after founding Facebook. He said, "When Facebook first started as a web-based platform, it was open," and added, "But as we transitioned to the mobile era where everyone carries a computer in their pocket, many things became restricted." He explained that operating became difficult as Facebook and other Meta products could only be offered through competitors' platforms. Zuckerberg has criticized the App Store's 30% commission policy on developers and the introduction of personalized ad blocking features.
Zuckerberg also harshly criticized, saying, "One of the things I wanted to do in the 10 to 15 years after founding Facebook was to build foundational technology that could shape people's social experiences, but hearing 'no' from platform providers made me think at some point, 'screw it.'" When Huang joked, "The broadcast opportunity is gone," in response to Zuckerberg's use of profanity, Zuckerberg immediately apologized.
Zuckerberg emphasized, "Of course, both closed and open platforms have pros and cons, and we also have closed aspects," but added, "Our vision is to support every user in creating their own AI agents." Meta unveiled its latest AI model, LLaMA 3.1, as open source on the 23rd. LLaMA 3.1 is known to have been trained using 16,000 of NVIDIA's latest commercial AI chips, the H100 GPUs. Zuckerberg said, "We are a major customer of NVIDIA," and joked, "Thanks to us, CEO Huang can sit here," drawing laughter.
