[Opinion] Honoring the Sacrifice and Dedication on United Nations Forces Participation Day
July 27th was United Nations Forces Participation Day. This day is a special occasion to remember and honor all the brave soldiers of the United Nations Forces who participated in the Korean War and dedicated themselves to protecting our country.
The Korean War broke out on June 25, 1950, and three years later, on July 27, 1953, the armistice agreement was signed. This allowed us to find a moment of peace amid the chaos of war. However, all this peace and rest were made possible thanks to the sacrifice of 1.98 million UN soldiers dispatched from 22 countries at that time. Without their dedication and sacrifice, the freedom and peace we enjoy today would never have been possible.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs organizes various events and activities to commemorate United Nations Forces Participation Day. Every year on July 27th, memorial services and commemorative events are held across the country to remember the dedication of the veterans, honor their sacrifices, and raise public awareness about the importance of national defense and veterans’ affairs. This year as well, under the auspices of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, the 「6·25 War United Nations Forces Participation Day Commemoration Ceremony」 was held at 10 a.m. on July 27th at Seoul KBS Hall, honoring the spirit of sacrifice of the UN forces and delivering a message of security cooperation to prevent the tragedy of war from repeating.
Commemorating this day is not merely about mourning past sacrifices. We pass on the noble spirit of the veterans to current and future generations and remind them of the preciousness of the freedom and peace gained through their sacrifices. In particular, through various educational programs and promotional activities that raise awareness of the horrors of war and the importance of peace, efforts are made to cultivate the public’s sense of national defense and veterans’ honor.
Although the traces of war have gradually faded over time, we must never forget that the freedom and peace we currently enjoy are thanks to the sacrifices of the veterans. Because of their sacrifices, we can enjoy today’s prosperity and stability. Therefore, as we observe July 27th, we once again remember their noble sacrifices and express our gratitude for their dedication.
