Jinju City to Fully Launch Former Jinju Station Cultural Street Project
Construction to Begin in November After Survey Completion, Power Line Undergrounding
Road Installation to Finish, Opening Scheduled for Second Half of Next Year
Jinju City in Gyeongnam announced on the 29th that the "Old Jinju Station Cultural Street Development Project," which is being promoted as part of the Old Jinju Station Railway Site Regeneration Project, is currently under consultation with the National Heritage Administration regarding the scope of the precision excavation survey of the buried heritage. As soon as the consultation is completed, the excavation survey and full-scale implementation of the project will begin.
This Old Jinju Station Cultural Street Development Project is the second phase of the Old Jinju Station Railway Site Regeneration Project, following the completion of the Railway Culture Park in June last year. Through the improvement of surrounding transportation and the creation of a pedestrian-priority cultural street, it will serve to organically connect the Railway Culture Park, the soon-to-be-relocated National Jinju Museum, and the Aerospace Public Science Museum, integrating the entire project. Once completed, the cultural street will span 1.4 km from the Namgang Riverside Medium-Sized Multipurpose Cultural Center to the Railway Culture Park.

After the excavation is completed, construction will begin in November, with plans to relocate overhead power lines underground and remove utility poles to improve the landscape. This will be followed by road construction, with the street scheduled to open in the second half of 2025.
As cafes and tea houses have already started to increase around the planned section of the cultural street on the west side of the Railway Culture Park, new cultural spaces are spreading, raising expectations for the future of this area.
Meanwhile, adjacent to the cultural street development area, the relocation and construction of the National Jinju Museum, a key facility of the railway site regeneration project, has been conducting a precision excavation survey of the buried heritage since the groundbreaking ceremony on June 24, which will continue until December.
The city has requested that trees within the construction site that need to be transplanted due to the relocation of the National Jinju Museum be moved to the area around the previous museum, so that local residents can reminisce about the old atmosphere. In response, the National Jinju Museum commissioned a professional institution to inspect the condition of the existing trees for transplantation.
The museum stated that the inspection revealed severe damage to the residential area and ongoing deterioration of the trees due to internal bacteria, making it difficult to restore their vitality through management. They explained, "If transplanted, the trees are unlikely to survive, so we inevitably plan to proceed with excavation after felling them," and asked for the deep understanding of local residents.
A city official said, "Through the Railway Culture Park, the development of the cultural street, the relocation and construction of the National Jinju Museum, the establishment of the public science museum, and the creation of the civic plaza and forest, we aim to transform the idle land of the old Jinju Station railway site, which had been left unused in the city center, into a regional cultural hub. We expect the Old Jinju Station Railway Site Regeneration Project to revitalize the stagnant area around the old Jinju Station."
