Shinsegae Food Obtains 'Zero Waste Landfill' Certification for Icheon and Cheonan Factories
All Residues After Preprocessing
Recycled as Compost, Feed, and Recycled Materials
Promoting Resource Circulation ... Strengthening ESG Competitiveness
Shinsegae Food announced on the 29th that its Icheon and Cheonan plants have each received the highest certification grades of 'Platinum' and 'Gold,' respectively, for Zero Waste To Landfill (ZWTL) from the global safety and environmental verification company UL.
Zero Waste To Landfill (ZWTL) aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills by verifying various treatment methods such as recycling and reuse of waste generated at business sites, and assigning certification grades accordingly. UL, a global safety and environmental verification company, certifies business sites based on the percentage of waste recycled instead of landfilled, with three grades: ▲Platinum (100%) ▲Gold (95?99%) ▲Silver (recycling rate 90?94%).
The Icheon plant, mainly responsible for preprocessing food ingredients at Shinsegae Food, achieved a 100% waste recycling rate and received the highest 'Platinum' certification for the second consecutive year. Since 2020, the Icheon plant has continuously recycled byproducts generated during the product manufacturing stage instead of landfilling or incinerating waste to increase resource circulation rates. Residues and wastewater treatment sludge from agricultural product preprocessing at the Icheon plant are entirely recycled into compost and feed, while waste synthetic resins such as vinyl and plastics are converted into solid fuel or pellets, which are reused as recycled raw materials.
Shinsegae Food’s Cheonan plant received the 'Gold' certification for Zero Waste To Landfill with a recognized waste recycling rate of 98%. Producing dough, bread, cakes, and more, the Cheonan plant has been making continuous efforts since 2021 to increase the resource circulation rate of over 2,000 tons of waste annually, including plant residues, wastewater treatment sludge, and waste synthetic resins generated during production. Currently, most of the waste is recycled. Plant residues from food production are recycled as livestock feed, wastewater treatment sludge is composted and used in agricultural production, and waste synthetic resins are recycled as raw materials.
