OECD Praises South Chungcheong's Carbon Neutrality Policy... Kim Tae-heum Says "Excellence of Policy Recognized"
Jeon Hyeongsik, Vice Governor for Political Affairs: "If the Special Act on Coal-Fired Power Plants Becomes Party Policy, Enactment Will Be Easier"
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has praised Chungnam Province's carbon neutrality policy.
According to Chungnam Province on the 22nd, the OECD recently published the 'OECD Economic Surveys: Korea 2024' and introduced Chungnam's response strategy for phasing out coal-fired power plants as an exemplary policy case in the field of carbon reduction.
Along with this, the OECD advised that discontinuing the use of fossil fuels could have negative impacts on specific areas where thermal power plants are located, and that tailored strategies are needed to minimize adverse effects through carbon reduction policies.
Jeon Hyungsik, Vice Governor for Political Affairs, held a briefing at the provincial government office on the same day and said, "It is highly significant that the OECD has given high marks to Chungnam's carbon reduction policies," adding, "We will ensure that Chungnam, as a special province for a carbon-neutral economy, can become a global leader."
Regarding the enactment of a special law to support regions affected by the closure of coal-fired power plants, which did not pass in the 21st National Assembly, he said, "If it is adopted as a party platform in the 22nd National Assembly, it will be easier to enact," and added, "We are working to ensure that it is adopted as a party platform by both the Democratic Party and the People Power Party."
Earlier, Governor Kim Taeheum also expressed his disappointment during a meeting with department heads held in the morning, saying, "While international organizations recognize the excellence of our policies, the response in our country remains lukewarm."
