US Democrats Weigh 'Harris Nomination' as New Presidential Candidate... Trump Says "Easier to Win"
New Candidate Must Be Selected by Early August
Harris Endorsement More Realistic Than Mini Election
Trump: "Easier Opponent to Beat Than Biden"
President Joe Biden, who has faced nearly a month of pressure to resign following a crushing defeat in the presidential TV debate, officially announced his withdrawal from the upcoming November election just over three months away. As a result, the Democratic Party must begin the process of selecting a new presidential candidate. With the election approaching and President Biden officially endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, the idea of nominating Harris as the Democratic candidate has gained significant traction.
According to Bloomberg News on the 21st (local time), the Democratic Party had been discussing the procedure for selecting a new presidential candidate even before President Biden’s resignation.
Within the Democratic Party, opinions were divided between nominating Vice President Harris as the presidential candidate and holding a "mini-election" to select a new candidate for greater public engagement. Potential Democratic candidates include Vice President Harris, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. However, with only three months left until the election, there is growing consensus that nominating Vice President Harris as the new candidate is the more realistic option.
The Democratic Party plans to conduct the candidate selection online in early next month, ahead of the party convention scheduled for June 19-22 in Chicago, Illinois. This move takes into account the candidate registration deadlines in some states, leaving little time before the actual candidate selection.
President Biden’s sudden announcement of his withdrawal from the presidential race and his official endorsement of Vice President Harris are seen as measures reflecting this situation.
President Biden stated, "Choosing Kamala Harris as vice president in 2020 was the best decision I ever made," adding, "I want to give Kamala my full support to become our party’s candidate this year. Democrats, it’s time to come together and defeat Trump."
Poll results gauging Vice President Harris’s competitiveness in the general election are mixed. According to an Ipsos poll conducted on the 16th with 992 American voters, Harris tied with former President Trump at 44% in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup. In contrast, President Biden trailed former President Trump by 2 percentage points, with 41% support compared to Trump’s 43%. Conversely, a YouGov poll conducted from the 13th to 16th with 1,582 American adults showed Harris trailing former President Trump by 5 percentage points, with 39% support to Trump’s 44%. In the same poll, Biden was behind Trump by only 2 percentage points, with 41% to 43% support in a Biden-Trump head-to-head.
