Jungnang-gu Operates Jungnang Ongdalsaem to Help Escape the Heat
Operating at 9 Locations Including Park Trails and Jungnangcheon Riverside from July 17 to August 15
Providing Eco-Friendly Label-Free Bottled Water... Managed by Resident Volunteers 'Saemjigi'
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) will operate the outdoor heat relief centers called ‘Jungnang Ongdalsam’ at nine locations in the area from July 17 to August 15.
‘Jungnang Ongdalsam,’ which has been in operation since 2021, is a water cooler refrigerator set up along outdoor walking paths where residents passing by can drink free cool bottled water and beat the heat during the hot summer. Last year, it received enthusiastic responses from residents, with over 800,000 bottles of water distributed.
Jungnang Ongdalsam can be found at six park walking trails with heavy resident traffic and three locations along the Jungnangcheon Stream. The locations are ▲ Bonghwasan (Onggi Theme Park, Bongsudae Park) ▲ Yongmasan (behind Yongma Senior Welfare Center, Yongma Waterfall Park, entrance of Sagajeong Park, Mangwoo History and Culture Park) ▲ Jungnangcheon Stream (Gyeomjae Small Library, opposite the Sehwa Public Daycare Center, Surim Grand Park).
The operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and each refrigerator provides about 300 bottles of water five times a day, totaling approximately 450,000 bottles free of charge over the month. The number of supply rounds will be flexibly adjusted depending on daily consumption at each location, stock status, and weather conditions.
Additionally, to reduce waste and promote recycling, the bottled water is provided without labels, and dedicated recycling bins for Jungnang Ongdalsam are installed to maintain a clean environment. In particular, volunteer ‘Saemjigi’ composed of Jungnang-gu residents manage the recycling and rest areas to help residents use the facilities conveniently.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “We operate Jungnang Ongdalsam to ensure the safety of residents engaging in outdoor activities during the hot summer. We hope a cool bottle of water will help you forget the heat, even if just for a moment.”
Besides Jungnang Ongdalsam, the district is implementing various heatwave countermeasures. First, 50 additional shade shelters will be installed at crosswalks with heavy foot traffic by July, allowing people waiting for signals to avoid direct sunlight. This will bring the total to 171 shelters (31 smart-type, 140 parasol-type).
