Over 3 Years, Average 330,000 Summer Car Accidents per Month... "Prepare with Special Coverage"
It has been revealed that the number of car accidents occurring during the summer over the past three years averages about 330,000 per month. This represents an increase of nearly 20,000 cases compared to normal periods.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service on the 15th, the average monthly number of car accidents during the summers of 2021 to 2023 was 332,000, which is a 6.0% (19,000 cases) increase compared to normal times.
With the vacation season underway and an increase in passengers, the number of injuries and deaths from car accidents were recorded at 149,863 and 166 respectively, which is 1.8% (2,623 people) and 2.5% (4 people) higher than usual.
More people are renting cars during vacations, and summer rental car accidents averaged 6,786 per month, 7.4% (470 cases) higher than normal. Accidents involving drivers under 30 years old with less driving experience increased significantly by 18%.
Excluding battery charging, emergency dispatch services during summer totaled 755,000 cases, 9.3% (64,000 cases) more than usual. Emergency rescue and towing services, which are closely related to car accidents, reached 343,000 cases in summer, 19.3% (55,000 cases) higher than normal.
The Financial Supervisory Service advised that drivers should carefully review their auto insurance riders to prepare for long-distance driving or unexpected situations while driving during the summer.
By using the ‘Short-term Driver Extension Rider,’ if someone else drives your car during a long-distance trip and an accident occurs, the damages (bodily injury, property damage, and personal injury) will be covered. Those with auto insurance in their own name can use the ‘Other Vehicle Driving Rider’ to cover damages from accidents while driving another vehicle. This rider is usually automatically included when subscribing to the basic coverage of 'Injury caused by uninsured vehicles.'
When using rental cars at tourist destinations, the ‘Rental Car Damage Rider’ covers damages such as repair costs for the rental car and rental fees (compensation varies by insurer). For those without existing auto insurance, ‘One-day Auto Insurance’ can be used.
In case of unexpected situations like battery discharge, problems can be resolved through the ‘Emergency Dispatch Service’ by contacting the insurance company’s call center. This rider provides services such as emergency rescue, towing, and emergency refueling.

Especially due to vehicle flooding caused by heavy summer rains and typhoons, as well as secondary accidents occurring while stopped on highways due to accidents or breakdowns, resulting in annual casualties and property damage, the financial authorities have launched the ‘Emergency Evacuation Alert Service’ this year in cooperation with auto insurers. Regardless of which insurer the vehicle is insured with or whether it is registered with Hi-Pass, evacuation guidance will be provided for vehicles at risk of flooding or secondary accidents.
