Ministry of Industry Conducts On-Site Inspection of Mine Safety Including Latest Underground Communication Technology in Preparation for Summer Heavy Rainfall
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy recently conducted an on-site inspection for "Mine Safety Preparedness for Summer Heavy Rain" on the 15th targeting mines in the Chungcheong region, where heavy rains have persisted, to check for damage caused by the heavy rain and to inspect vulnerable facilities within the workplaces as well as the latest underground communication technologies.
This mine safety on-site inspection was attended by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea Mine Reclamation Corporation, mine officials, and underground communication facility companies. They focused on safety management items according to mine safety technical standards, such as slope management at the workplaces, measures to prevent groundwater leaking into underground workplaces and surface water inflow from outside, and inspection of pumps and piping. Furthermore, the Ministry plans to strengthen on-site safety inspections for mines at risk of disasters through four nationwide mine safety offices and expand safety management measures such as enhancing rescue team training to prepare for disaster situations.
In particular, on this day, the Ministry checked underground communication technology that can monitor the location and health status of mine workers in real time to prevent accidents where workers become trapped underground. By utilizing underground communication technology, the location of disaster victims can be immediately identified and rescued in the event of a mine accident where initial response is critical.

They plan to encourage special safety education for workers on slope management to prevent vulnerable factors on slopes during rainy weather from leading to landslides in mines. Additionally, to prevent flood damage in mines, they will continue efforts to prevent disasters, such as supplying more than 60 drainage facilities to about 30 mines.
