Yeongdeok County Releases Young Muncheegajami into Coastal Waters
Contributing to Enhancing Regional Fisheries Competitiveness and Increasing Fishermen's Income
Yeongdeok County in North Gyeongsang Province, in collaboration with the Gyeongbuk Fisheries Resources Research Institute, released 100,000 juvenile Muncheegajami into the waters around Gyeongjeong 2-ri and Gyeongjeong 3-ri on the 4th to protect local fishery resources and boost the income of fishing industry workers.
The juvenile Muncheegajami used for this project were selected as healthy 5 cm-sized fry, carefully raised for six months after being artificially fertilized and hatched from eggs obtained from wild parents in January.
Yeongdeok County and the Gyeongbuk Fisheries Resources Research Institute expect that after about three years, the released fish will mature and contribute to the increase of Gajami resources and catch volumes along the East Sea coast.
County Governor Kim Kwangyeol said, "We will actively support the production and release of fish species that can not only restore the marine ecosystem but also enhance the competitiveness of the local fisheries industry and increase the income of fishermen."
Muncheegajami is a marine fish belonging to the Pleuronectiformes family, and is also known as 'Dodari' in some regions. It inhabits the seabed of coastal areas, with its spawning season occurring from December to February.
