Gateball is a sport in which players use a T-shaped stick to hit a ball through gates on the field and strike the goal pole. It is physically less demanding and effective for fostering friendship and communication skills, making it especially popular among the elderly.
On this day, a total of 42 teams competed in the preliminary rounds across seven courts, and the winners, runners-up, and third-place teams were determined through a tournament format.
Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, who attended the opening ceremony, said, "I hope this tournament will be a pleasant day that promotes health and opens a place for unity among the various divisions. I also hope that gateball will continue to grow as an everyday sport loved by even more citizens."
Meanwhile, the city plans to further expand sports facilities and programs tailored to the needs of the elderly, as interest in healthy aging and leisure continues to rise.
