"Air Conditioners Available, No Worries About Heatwaves"...Geumcheon-gu Supports Air Conditioners for Heatwave-Vulnerable Households
Support for 50 Vulnerable Households Unable to Use Heat Shelter Due to Mobility Issues, Disabilities, or Illness
Customized Support with Wall-Mounted or Window Air Conditioners Based on Housing Environment
Geumcheon-gu (District Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it has supported the installation of air conditioners in 50 low-income households to help heat-vulnerable residents spend a cool and safe summer.
When vulnerable groups living in poor housing conditions stay indoors without using cooling appliances, the indoor heat cannot be released, increasing the risk of heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses.
Accordingly, the district, in cooperation with local community centers, conducted on-site inspections and selected low-income households that have difficulty using cooling shelters due to mobility issues, disabilities, or illnesses, and are at risk of heat damage, as recipients for air conditioner support.
Customized support was provided to allow the selection of either wall-mounted or window-type air conditioners depending on the housing environment of the installed households. For rented households where the landlord did not consent to wall-mounted air conditioner installation or for households that move frequently, window-type air conditioners were recommended and installed.
From July to August, during the peak heat period, the district plans to check the proper operation of the air conditioners and the well-being of the supported households, and review the possibility of expanding the project through satisfaction surveys.
The air conditioner support project budget was 50 million KRW, utilizing sponsorship funds from the Seoul Community Chest of Korea.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, “As heatwaves become longer and stronger, the use of cooling appliances should now be recognized and approached as a basic welfare right for residents,” adding, “We will continue to expand support for cooling appliances so that vulnerable residents can spend a cool and healthy summer.”
