HMM announced that it held the naming ceremony for the Ruby at Hanwha Ocean Okpo Shipyard in Geoje, Gyeongnam on the 19th. The Ruby is the seventh container ship delivered among the 12 vessels contracted in June 2021 (6 from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and 6 from Hanwha Ocean), all of which are 13,000 TEU-class ships.
The Ruby will be deployed on HMM's exclusive US West Coast route, PSX, calling at major domestic ports including Busan, Gwangyang, and Incheon. Starting from Shanghai (China) on the 25th, it will call at Gwangyang (Korea) - Busan (Korea) - LA (USA) - Oakland (USA) - Busan (Korea) - Gwangyang (Korea) - Incheon (Korea) in sequence.
On the PSX route, where 8,600 to 10,000 TEU-class vessels have been deployed, HMM plans to expand its capacity by introducing new 13,000 TEU-class ships including the Ruby. Once all 12 of the 13,000 TEU-class container ships are delivered by the end of this year, HMM's total capacity will reach approximately 1 million TEU. With ultra-large vessels of 10,000 TEU or more accounting for 80% of the total capacity, cost competitiveness is expected to improve further. HMM is the only company where vessels of 10,000 TEU or more make up over 80% of its capacity.
