No 'Flood Damage' This Year... Mayor Oh Se-hoon Inspects Rainwater Storage Sites
Inspection Visit to Sadang IC Detention Basin Expansion Site
at Gwanak Lake Park
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon will inspect disaster prevention facilities to prevent flooding around Sadang Station and Dorimcheon, including the site of the expansion of the detention basin that stores rainwater during heavy rainfall.
On the afternoon of the 18th, Mayor Oh will visit the Sadang IC detention basin expansion site and Gwanaksan Lake Park to check preparedness for the summer heavy rain season.
This inspection was conducted ahead of the full rainy season. Mayor Oh plans to inspect the '10cm Rainwater Storage' site, which temporarily stores rainwater in available spaces to reduce runoff and prevent flooding damage in low-lying areas. The 10cm Rainwater Storage project, starting this summer, temporarily stores rainwater in available spaces such as building rooftops, playgrounds, parks, and construction sites.
First, Mayor Oh will visit the detention basin expansion site upstream of Sadangcheon as the first inspection area of the day to check the preparation status. The city completed construction last month to expand the detention capacity from 18,000 tons to 30,000 tons by excavating an additional 5 meters at the bottom of the existing detention basin. It is expected to hold back rainwater coming down from Umyeonsan during heavy rain, reducing flood damage around Sadang and Isu Stations in the lower part of Sadangcheon.
Next, he will move to Gwanaksan Lake Park upstream of Dorimcheon in Gwanak-gu to inspect plans and execution strategies for storing rainwater in the lake. In case of a heavy rain forecast, the lake water will be drained in advance to lower the water level, and rainwater will be stored in the lake when it rains. The maximum planned storage capacity of the lake park is 2,500 tons, which, together with the temporarily operated Sillim Public Garage detention basin (35,000 tons) this year, is expected to reduce the risk of Dorimcheon flooding.

In addition, Seoul has secured rainwater storage sites to prevent urban flooding. Around Sadang Station, the rooftops and parade grounds (6,000 tons) of the Capital Defense Command building will be used, and around Gangnam Station, public and private building rooftops will be utilized as rainwater storage sites. In the Yangjaecheon area, Cheonggye Reservoir (420,000 tons) and Seoul Grand Park parking lot (2,300 tons) will be used.
