Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) has been honored with the Korean Urban Design Society President's Award at the '2024 Korea Land Grand Prize' hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The Korea Land Grand Prize, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, and the Architectural Space Research Institute, is a major competition that discovers and awards outstanding cases related to the country's land, cities, and landscapes.
This evaluation selected the final winners by comprehensively reflecting the first round of document screening, the second round of on-site evaluation, public voting (online), and expert reviews.
The district was recognized for excellence by winning in the 'Vibrant Streets and Squares' category with the 'Anyangcheon Project Coexisting with Ecology and Culture.' In particular, the district's efforts to preserve the natural ecological environment of Anyangcheon and the residents' proactive and active participation in creating various cultural and sports spaces received high praise.
Currently, Anyangcheon flows through Yeongdeungpo-gu over approximately a 5km stretch from Sinjeonggyo Bridge to Omokgyo Bridge, Mokdonggyo Bridge, and Yangpyeonggyo Bridge. This area is rich in waterfront environments and hosts diverse flora and fauna, allowing people to experience beautiful natural scenery within the city.
In this project, the district prioritized the preservation of Anyangcheon's natural ecology and developed plaza spaces where culture, leisure, rest, and communication can be enjoyed, transforming Anyangcheon into a new center of waterfront culture and expanding it as a living space for residents.
For 'Anyangcheon Coexisting with Ecology and Culture,' the district created ▲ migratory bird nesting sites and ecological wetlands, ▲ willow groves and ecological resting areas, and established ▲ wind path forests to mitigate the urban heat island effect. Additionally, barren sites were newly developed into ▲ rose gardens and ecological flower gardens, providing beautiful resting spaces.
Moreover, diverse walking paths such as pedestrian-only roads, deck roads, barefoot clay trails, and palm mat paths were newly installed, along with a dog playground where pets can run freely and landscape lighting for nighttime activities.
Furthermore, 28 remote access control facilities and a CCTV monitoring system were installed at the entrances of stairs and ramps along the Anyangcheon riverside, creating a safer and more comfortable walking environment for citizens visiting Anyangcheon.
In particular, the district made every effort to activate festival programs that capture the unique charm of Anyangcheon, where neighbors and citizens can gather and communicate. They developed a walking tour program called the 'Waterfront Waterway Course,' which covers major landmarks of Anyangcheon, and expanded resident participation through various projects to discover waterfront cultural initiatives.
Additionally, to enable residents to enjoy sports and leisure activities close to their daily lives, the district renovated Yangpyeongnuri Sports Park and sports facilities under Sinjeonggyo Bridge, and newly established a park golf course, tennis courts, futsal fields, and an X-game park, creating a living space where people and nature coexist along Anyangcheon.
