Dr. Sung-Ik Park, Principal Researcher at ETRI, Awarded the ATSC Richer Medal in the U.S.
The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on the 17th that Dr. Park Sung-ik of the Media Broadcasting Research Lab received the '2024 North American Broadcast Standardization Organization (ATSC) Richer Medal.'

View original imageDr. Park was unanimously awarded the ATSC Richer Medal by the ATSC Board in recognition of his contributions to the standardization of ATSC 3.0 technology in Brazil and India, as well as the development of Layered Division Multiplexing (LDM) technology.
The ATSC Richer Medal is named after Mark Richer, the former ATSC chairman who led ATSC for 20 years. ATSC awards this medal to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated exemplary leadership in realizing and advancing ATSC’s mission and vision.
Dr. Park has actively conducted research related to the physical layer standardization of ATSC 3.0 in Brazil and India. He participated in Brazil’s TV 3.0 standardization and is leading the LDM-MIMO transmission technology based on ATSC 3.0.
He also contributed to India’s D2M (Direct-to-Mobile) standardization, promoting the excellence of ATSC 3.0 mobile broadcasting technology, and worked diligently toward the ATSC 3.0 standardization in both Brazil and India.

Meanwhile, Mark Richer is known as a living legend of ATSC, having left many achievements including the standardization of ATSC 1.0 and 3.0, the analog-to-digital transition, the distribution of HDTV set-top boxes in cooperation with the U.S. government, and the global expansion of ATSC.
