'World Innovative Universities Ranking' Announced
Ranked 37th in Social Responsibility Category
Yeungnam University (President Choi Oechul) announced on the 15th that it ranked 3rd in Korea and 35th in the world in the Leadership category, and 3rd in Korea and 37th in the world in the Social Responsibility category in the "2024 World University Ranking for Innovation (WURI)" released by the Institute for Policy and Strategy on National Competitiveness at the 4th Hanseatic League of Universities (HLU) Conference held at Franklin University Switzerland on the 7th.
The World University Ranking for Innovation has been released since 2020 through the Hanseatic League of Universities Conference, which is hosted by the Hanseatic League of Universities, the Swiss Institute for Industrial Policy, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, and the Taylor Institute at Franklin University Switzerland, and organized by the Institute for Policy and Strategy on National Competitiveness. The WURI ranking evaluates innovative university programs with a qualitative approach, not only considering traditional academic achievements but also assessing how universities respond to industrial and social needs with innovative and practical outcomes.
In 2024, the ranking evaluated 2,880 cases from 1,072 universities worldwide. The WURI ranking announces the Global Top 300 universities and the Top 100 universities in 13 categories. Among these, Yeungnam University was listed in the "Leadership" category, an indicator of innovative approaches, and the "Social Responsibility" category, an indicator of innovation.
In the Leadership category, Yeungnam University received high marks for its efforts as an innovative leader in education and community development, advancing the Saemaul Undong and Korea's development experience into sustainable development policies, and applying them to the current era with initiatives such as "Saemaul 2.0" and "Smart Saemaul." Furthermore, Yeungnam University was recognized for its global leadership contributions to humanity by not limiting Saemaul Undong to an academic field but fostering global Saemaul leaders and spreading Saemaul studies through the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul, the Institute for International Development Cooperation, various agreements, the Global Saemaul Forum, and community development consulting worldwide.
In the Social Responsibility category, the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul at Yeungnam University was commended for nurturing future leaders from developing countries through education on Saemaul Undong, Korea's development experience, sustainable development, and leadership training. The university's efforts to overcome global poverty and establish self-reliant economic foundations, as well as the tangible impact and growth demonstrated by students who studied Saemaul studies at Yeungnam University and applied them in their home countries, also received high praise.
President Choi Oechul of Yeungnam University stated, "The high evaluations in the fields of leadership and social responsibility are the result of our continuous efforts to nurture talent that contributes to the co-development of developing countries and Korea. It is important to create an environment where we can cooperate and innovate for national development and the common prosperity of the human community, and Yeungnam University has been highly evaluated for its efforts to fulfill this role. We will continue to provide full support to elevate Yeungnam University's educational and research achievements in all academic fields to a world-class level."
Meanwhile, in December last year, Yeungnam University was also recognized for its efforts to lead sustainable development in developing countries through Korea-style ODA projects at the Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul, and received the Porter Prize in the Project Effectiveness category at the "10th CSV·ESG Porter Prize," jointly hosted by the Institute for Industrial Policy Studies, Dong-A Ilbo, and Channel A.
