Gangdong-gu Prevents Missing Persons with Developmental Disabilities Using Location-Tracking Watches and Necklaces
Providing Wearable Smart Location Trackers like Wristwatches and Necklaces to People with Developmental Disabilities
Sharing Location Information with Caregivers to Prevent Disappearance and Reduce Anxiety... Supporting Psychological Stability
Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced that it will promote the ‘Smart Guardian’ project in collaboration with Holt Gangdong Welfare Center to prevent missing cases among people with developmental disabilities.
The ‘Smart Guardian’ project provides GPS-enabled tracking devices in the form of wristwatches or necklaces to people with developmental disabilities who are at high risk of going missing, allowing real-time location tracking and sharing the location information with their guardians.
In addition to the expected effect of preventing missing cases, a satisfaction survey conducted last year among 22 families of people with developmental disabilities in the area who received and used the smart devices showed that over 90% of respondents were very satisfied and expressed a positive desire to continue using the devices.
This year, Gangdong-gu plans to recruit 16 new people with developmental disabilities residing in the area for support. Applications can be submitted online through the Holt Gangdong Welfare Center website from June 17 to 28.
Recipients will receive the smart tracking device along with full coverage of communication fees for two years free of charge. Even after two years, users can continue to use the device by paying a monthly communication fee of 3,300 KRW. Auxiliary parts that allow the device to be used as a necklace, watch, etc., will also be provided, and non-face-to-face training on how to use the device will be conducted.

Mayor Lee Soo-hee of Gangdong-gu said, “This project not only helps prevent accidents and missing cases among people with developmental disabilities through the support of smart technology devices but also alleviates guardians’ anxiety, providing psychological stability to families of people with developmental disabilities. We will continue to provide meticulous support so that everyone can live safely and with peace of mind.”
