Pukyong National University Launches G-LAMP Project Group for Basic Science Research
25 Billion Won Over 5 Years...Aiming to Become a Global Hub for Water Circulation Research
Pukyong National University (President Jang Youngsoo) announced that the ‘G-LAMP Project Group’ (Director Kim Youngseok), aiming to become a global hub for basic science research, has officially launched this month.
The G-LAMP Project is a large-scale research program by the Ministry of Education designed to strengthen the university’s research foundation and produce world-class research outcomes. Its goals include establishing an autonomous research institute management and support system within universities, promoting theme-oriented joint research without barriers between majors and departments, and supporting collaborative research led by emerging researchers such as postdoctoral fellows.
Following the selection of eight universities, including Pukyong National University, for the LAMP Project last year, six additional universities joined this year, and the program has been expanded and internationalized as the G-LAMP Project. Each university selects one of ten basic science fields to establish a focused thematic research system and conduct global collaborative research.
Pukyong National University, with 15 faculty members including Project Director Professor Kim Youngseok (Department of Environmental Geoscience), will receive 5 billion KRW annually for five years, totaling 25 billion KRW, to advance as a world-class research hub in ‘water circulation’ studies.
The project group will focus on three main themes: atmospheric science, marine science, and geoscience, aiming to establish a sustainable and self-sufficient core R&D research base for integrated marine-atmosphere-geoscience studies. The group will research not only the understanding of global water circulation in response to climate and environmental changes but also the safe and efficient use of regional water resources and the prediction and response to their social impacts.
In particular, to become a global center for water circulation research, the group plans to promote international academic exchange and cooperation. They also intend to expand their research to include water resource acquisition and circulation on future space planets, thereby opening new horizons in basic science research and contributing to the advancement of future science and technology.
