Additionally, the consumption structure centered on ‘popular fish species’ means that the potential value of less-preferred seafood products is not fully utilized. As a result, some seafood products are distributed at low prices or discarded, increasing the need for systematic responses.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will hold a policy forum on the 12th at the Government Complex Sejong, chaired by Minister Kang Do-hyung, to establish the ‘Plan for Increasing Income from Seafood Products.’ This forum serves as a preparatory stage to develop policies aimed at strengthening seafood competitiveness and adding high value, thereby increasing fishermen’s income. The ministry explained that the forum was organized to listen to industry opinions and explore mutual cooperation measures among the industry and related organizations.

The forum will be attended by heads of seafood-related organizations, distribution and processing companies, academia, and government officials, who will present and discuss topics including ▲ strengthening production efficiency ▲ establishing a catch separation and verification system ▲ flexibilizing distribution and processing methods ▲ building a rational consumer market and responding to illegal fishing. Minister Kang stated, “Through this forum, we will redefine the value of our seafood products and actively reflect various measures that can practically increase fishermen’s income in policies.”
