The Olympic rings sculpture measures 29 meters in width, 13 meters in height, and weighs about 30 tons. It is equipped with 100,000 white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to make it visible at night.
Pierre Angel, project team leader at ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel company that produced the sculpture, said, "We considered optimal weight, strength, visibility, and potential turbulence. It was a once-in-a-lifetime challenge." Tony Estanguet, president of the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee, welcomed the installation, saying, "It shows the Games are not far off. We are in the final stretch."
There are 49 days left until the opening of the Paris Olympics. Various Olympic events and competitions will be held around the Eiffel Tower. The athletes' water parade on the Seine River will end at the point in front of the Eiffel Tower, and a spectacular celebration stage will continue at the Trocad?ro Plaza opposite the Eiffel Tower. Beach volleyball matches will take place at the 'Eiffel Tower Stadium' in the Champ de Mars, the front yard of the Eiffel Tower, while judo and wrestling competitions will be held at the nearby Arena Champ de Mars.
