Gyeongbuk Province Develops "Hyohangbogam," an Excellent Senior-Friendly Food Using Jujube as Main Ingredient... Technology Transferred to Aram Farm
Gyeongbuk Province has developed "Hyohangbogam," the nation's first senior-friendly forest product food made primarily from jujube.
"Hyohangbogam" has been designated as an excellent senior-friendly food by the Korea Food Industry Cluster Promotion Agency under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
According to the Donguibogam, jujube "tastes sweet, is non-toxic, soothes the stomach, protects the five organs, and if eaten regularly, improves complexion, lightens the body, and prevents aging." Jujube has long been considered an anti-aging food and is known for various health benefits, including alleviating neurosis and improving blood circulation. Gyeongbuk accounts for 70% of the nation's jujube production.
The newly designated product is a stage 3 senior-friendly food, a puree-type health drink that can be consumed with the tongue.
Firm green jujubes are processed by removing the stems and seeds, then softened using a low-temperature enzyme treatment method to meet the stage 3 requirements for senior-friendly foods. The product is also fortified with calcium and dietary fiber to enhance essential nutrients for seniors, conforms to the Korean Industrial Standards (KS) quality specifications for senior-friendly foods, and features a safety cap for added convenience.
Last May, Gyeongbuk Province transferred the patent for "jujube low glycemic index food composition" to Aram Farm Co., Ltd. (CEO Yoon Sunjoo). Aram Farm, in collaboration with the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Medical Innovation Foundation, was selected for the "Regional Specialized Industry Promotion" project organized by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs.
A Gyeongbuk Province official stated, "After the Gyeongbuk Forest Environment Research Institute developed the technology, it was transferred to Aram Farm for a fee, and Aram Farm is now producing Hyohangbogam. It is currently being sold in stores in Gyeongsan and online. We plan to utilize the strengths of senior-friendly excellent foods to pioneer new markets targeting the elderly."
Yoon Sunjoo, CEO of Aram Farm, expressed, "Hyohangbogam is a soft puree-type health drink, differentiated from the porridge and side dish-type senior-friendly foods that have dominated until now. By collaborating with institutions providing specialized nutrition management services for the elderly, such as care facilities, we aim to contribute to revitalizing the consumption of regionally specialized forest products."
Jeon Youngsoo, Director of the Gyeongbuk Forest Environment Research Institute, stated, "Through the commercialization of this technology transfer, the forest bio research achievements of Gyeongbuk Province will drive the joint growth of forest farmers and companies. We will do our best to make this a successful example of a regionally specialized industry based on forest products."
