Gwangju City Councilor Lee Gwi-soon: "There Must Be Killer Content Suitable for an Asian Culture Hub City"
Lee Gwisoon, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Democratic Party, Gwangsan-gu 4), argued that there is no visible culture in the ‘Asia Culture Centered City Gwangju’ and that content is needed.
On the 4th, during the 1st regular session of the 325th meeting, Councilor Lee conducted a city administration inquiry under the theme ‘A City Without Visible Culture, Gwangju.’
He stated, “Projects are not connected with each other and have simply degenerated into projects that just focus on building structures. It is very regrettable that there is no comprehensive vision for the cultural city overall,” adding, “We need to review the parts that have been insufficient so far and prepare improvements to fill policies and content from the perspective of the users to attract citizen participation and national interest.”
He also pointed out, “The winning design for the Sajik Park permanent performance hall has been raised with violations so severe that construction is impossible, and there are many issues regarding the accessibility of the performance hall site and the location of the parking lot site,” emphasizing, “The creation of a permanent performance hall solely for building purposes requires a complete reconsideration.”
Furthermore, he said, “The Asia Culture Centered City project is the only government-supported cultural project in the country with a legal basis and budget support,” adding, “There must be an integrated execution system and integrated platform established to maintain the overall direction of the Asia Culture Centered City without losing its focus, and the Vice Mayor for Cultural Economy should take charge of overseeing it.”

In response, Gwangju Mayor Kang Kijeong said, “I completely agree with the idea of just building structures to secure the budget while neglecting how to operate them,” and added, “I cannot understand building a permanent performance hall in Sajik Park, which does not harmonize with its surroundings, and I felt that the project to create a cultural city itself is not cultural. We will proceed with the overall projects in a substantial manner through adjustment and review.”
