This marks his first top 10 finish since achieving back-to-back wins at the Shriners Children's Open last October. Before this tournament, he had played in 15 events without ever finishing in the top 10. His personal best was a tie for 17th at the WM Phoenix Open in February.
Starting tied for 11th place, 7 strokes behind, Kim collected 7 birdies (1 bogey). He made three consecutive birdies from holes 1 to 3, then added another birdie at the 7th hole (par 4) to enter the race for the title. He then added ‘stepping stone birdies’ at the 10th and 12th holes, narrowing the gap to the leader to 2 strokes. However, at the 14th hole (par 4), after his tee shot landed in the rough, he made a bogey with a ‘3-putt from 3-on’. He lost momentum in his chase afterward but added a birdie at the final 18th hole (par 4) to secure a spot in the top 5.
