Civil Groups Protest Jeonse Fraud Special Act Veto Threat: "Blocking Victims' Last Hope"
After the amendment to the Special Act on Jeonse Fraud was passed in the National Assembly plenary session, the government announced it would exercise its veto power, prompting strong opposition from civic groups against the government and ruling party.
On the 29th at 11 a.m., the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy held a press conference in front of the Presidential Office in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, warning that if President Yoon Seok-yeol uses his veto power, they will continue to urge the amendment of the special law in the 22nd National Assembly as well.
Lee Cheol-min, chairman of the National Countermeasures Committee for Victims of Jeonse Fraud and Empty Jeonse, stated, "The current government has never presented proper supplementary legislation or measures for the special law in the past year, yet on the day before the amendment vote, it suddenly announced government measures, mocking the victims. They lied about having consulted the victims without ever properly talking to them, and deceived the public by acting as if no government funds were spent on LH purchases, even though national budget inevitably goes into it."
He continued, "They announced contradictory plans, saying that bond evaluation after relief is impossible, but that LH would directly appraise the damaged houses and bid on them. If these measures could be implemented without amending the special law, they should have done so long ago. With eight victims already lost, it seems they are treating human lives too lightly," he condemned.

Furthermore, Chairman Lee warned, "As bad as the malicious landlords who committed Jeonse fraud are, the Yoon Seok-yeol administration is equally bad for refusing to acknowledge the government's failure in real estate policy and denying the people's right to life and minimum housing. The Victims' Countermeasures Committee will not give up and will run tirelessly to solve the Jeonse fraud problem, even if it means breaking their bodies."
