Large Landslide in Papua New Guinea, South Pacific... "Estimated Over 100 Deaths"
AFP and other news agencies reported on the 24th (local time) that a landslide occurred in a highland village in the island nation of Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific, resulting in numerous casualties.
According to reports, the landslide occurred around 3 a.m. on the same day in a remote highland area of Enga Province, approximately 600 km northwest of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, and engulfed surrounding villages.
Peter Ipatas, governor of Enga Province, told AFP, "A large landslide has caused damage to residents' lives and property," adding, "More than six villages have been affected by the landslide." Governor Ipatas described the landslide as an "unprecedented natural disaster."
AFP noted that various estimates have been made, ranging from local residents saying the death toll is around 100 to reports suggesting the number of fatalities could reach several hundred, but no accurate statistics have been confirmed.
On social media, videos have been posted showing villagers pulling bodies trapped under rocks and trees.

Authorities in Enga Province have dispatched an emergency response team composed of doctors, military and police personnel, and members of United Nations agencies to the site for rescue and recovery operations.
