Lee Jae-myung "Accepts Ruling Party's Pension Reform Plan... Willing to Meet Yoon"
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 23rd that "Today, we will officially accept the government and ruling party's proposal and push for its passage" regarding pension reform.
On the same day, while traveling to Bongha Village in Gimhae, Gyeongnam to attend the memorial service for the late former President Roh Moo-hyun, Lee conducted a YouTube live broadcast and said, "I hope the ruling party cooperates proactively."
With Lee's sudden acceptance of the ruling party's proposal, pension reform negotiations are expected to accelerate rapidly.
So far, the ruling and opposition parties have agreed on a "13% increase in insurance premium rates," but there are differences over the income replacement rate of 43-45%. The Democratic Party has proposed 45%, while the People Power Party has suggested a compromise of 43-44%.
The government has not officially presented a proposal, stating it will leave the matter to the National Assembly. Lee said, "It's a 1 percentage point difference. The rest of the opinions have almost converged," adding, "It could be settled before the end of the 21st National Assembly."
Lee also stated on social media (SNS), "The Democratic Party has requested a special committee on pensions to process the reform bill," and "If the government and ruling party make a decision, the pension reform bill could be passed at the plenary session on the 28th."
