The majority of residents in Seocho-gu, Seoul, reported high satisfaction with their current lives and a strong intention to continue living in Seocho-gu in the future.
According to the results of the "2023 Seocho-gu Social Survey" announced by the district on the 22nd, 87.2% of residents responded that they are highly satisfied with their current lives. Additionally, 94.7% of residents expressed a desire to continue residing in Seocho-gu going forward. This represents a 2.3 percentage point increase compared to the previous survey conducted in 2019, with satisfaction rates exceeding 90% evenly across all genders and age groups. Those who felt pride in being Seocho-gu residents accounted for 77.8%, an increase of 2.6 percentage points from the 2019 survey.
This survey was conducted in September of last year through face-to-face interviews by surveyors visiting 3,879 household members aged 15 and older within Seocho-gu. It covered 72 items across 12 areas including housing, household and family, health, education, employment, culture and leisure, social participation, safety, transportation, environment, elderly life, and public administration to assess residents' satisfaction, quantitative and qualitative levels, and areas of interest.
The survey found that 69% of preschool children in Seocho-gu are enrolled in daycare centers, and 91% are satisfied with the childcare methods. Childcare satisfaction increased by 22.3 percentage points compared to the 2019 survey. According to childcare statistics (as of 2022), the proportion of public daycare centers in Seocho-gu was 51.8%, significantly higher than the Seoul city average of 38.8%.
Overall satisfaction with public education in Seocho-gu was high, with the highest satisfaction in educational facilities (83.9%). Satisfaction with private education was somewhat lower than public education but showed the highest satisfaction in accessibility (75.2%). Among residents, 33.6% use district libraries, citing comfortable facilities and convenience (44.4%) as reasons for use.
More than six out of ten residents felt safe in most situations involving crime. Specific safety perceptions included crime victimization (66.4%), disasters (66%), building accidents (63.2%), and walking alone at night (62.4%). The most desired resident need was the installation of location guide signs for crime prevention (43.4%). According to crime statistics (as of 2022), Seocho-gu has the lowest rates of robbery, theft, and violent crime among the three Gangnam districts.
About 84.4% of residents were satisfied with Seocho-gu’s public transportation environment. The most requested resident needs were improvements in pedestrian environments (31.2%) and expansion of public parking lots (19.2%). Among residents, 81.2% were satisfied with the green environment, and 76.9% were generally satisfied with the alley environment in front of their homes. Notably, 74.2% of residents were satisfied with the recycling waste disposal system.
The proportion of single elderly households in Seocho-gu was 5.2%, lower than that of Seoul city and Gangnam-gu, and the elderly population ratio was 15.4% (based on the 2022 population census), also lower than Seoul city.
About 45.8% of residents had experience with civil complaint administrative services in the past year, and among users, 82.9% were satisfied with the services. Furthermore, residents most hoped for youth employment, startup support, and skill development support (26.5%) as key policy projects, and prioritized transportation (30.4%) as the main policy area to be promoted.
Seocho-gu plans to statistically analyze residents’ interests and administrative demands through this social survey, verify the reliability of each item, and produce a report. The report will be used as basic data for establishing customized policies for residents.

Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, stated, “The survey results, which reflect the sincere voices of residents, will serve as a valuable foundation for creating major projects in Seocho-gu,” and added, “We will conduct the survey every two years instead of every four years to better incorporate residents’ needs and opinions into district administration.”
