Ulsan City to Create 'Pedestrian Priority Roads'
Three Priority Sites Including Wolpyeong Elementary School in Nam-gu Designated
Five-Year Plan Study... Additional Locations to Be Identified
Ulsan City is implementing people-centered urban transportation policies to ensure pedestrian safety.
Ulsan City announced that by May, it will designate three major back roads with high pedestrian traffic as "Pedestrian Priority Roads."
A "Pedestrian Priority Road" is a road where sidewalks and roadways are not separated, and pedestrian movement is given priority over vehicles to guarantee pedestrian safety and convenience.
On these roads, pedestrians can walk across the entire roadway, and drivers must slow down and keep a safe distance when passing pedestrians.
If necessary, in consultation with the local police chief, vehicle speed may be limited to as low as 20 km/h, making these roads citizen-centered living streets where pedestrian safety is the top priority.
Ulsan City will first designate three areas as "Pedestrian Priority Roads" for a pilot operation starting this month: the area around Wolpyeong Elementary School in Sinjeong-dong, Nam-gu; the area around Babo Intersection in Mugeo-dong; and the area around Nammok Daycare Center in Seobu-dong, Dong-gu.
In addition, based on the results of the ongoing "Five-Year Safe Pedestrian Traffic Plan" study, Ulsan plans to identify and operate additional "Pedestrian Priority Roads" through consultation with district offices and related organizations.
An Ulsan City official stated, "Currently, pedestrians account for the highest proportion of traffic fatalities, and many pedestrian accidents occur on narrow back roads near residential and commercial areas. We expect that designating Pedestrian Priority Roads will help create a pleasant walking environment where pedestrians can walk safely and conveniently."
