Wando-gun Hustles to Boost Abalone Consumption
Multifaceted Promotion of Online and Offline Sales Events and Publicity Activities
Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do is conducting extensive promotional and sales events to boost abalone consumption.
According to the county on the 20th, April to May is the peak season for abalone flooding shipments every year. This year, abalone farmers are facing difficulties due to sluggish consumption caused by the economic downturn and falling abalone prices.
Accordingly, the county is diversifying efforts to stabilize abalone prices and ensure smooth supply and demand by promoting online and offline abalone sales events in cooperation with organizations and companies.
In January, Jeollanam-do, Wando-gun, the Korea Abalone Industry Association, the Wando-gun Abalone Association, Wando Abalone Co., Ltd., and other abalone distribution and export associations held a meeting to discuss ways to revitalize abalone consumption and have been promoting sales events.

In March, starting with a business agreement with GS Retail to promote the consumption of agricultural, fishery, and specialty products, support has been provided for online platforms and distribution channels in collaboration with large retail companies such as E-Mart and Lotte Mart.
In April, they participated in the Jeollanam-do seafood promotion event at ‘Suwon Mega Show 2024 Season 1,’ the largest consumer goods expo in Korea, and held abalone discount sales promotions at about 90 E-Mart branches nationwide.
Additionally, promotional activities highlighting the excellence of abalone were conducted by visiting sister local governments such as Yangcheon-gu in Seoul, Yeonsu-gu in Incheon, Ansan-si in Gyeonggi-do, and Paju-si.
In May, during the Jangbogo Seafood Festival, the Korea Abalone Producers Wando-gun Association operated free abalone steamed tasting and abalone dish sales booths, receiving great responses.
From the 15th to the 17th, 12 local companies participated in the Seoul International Seafood & Fisheries Expo held at COEX and operated the ‘Wando-gun Joint Pavilion.’
The county plans to continue promotional events with large companies such as Kia Motors, Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, Ajin Industry, and large retail marts like GS Retail.
Also, from the 29th to the 31st, a discount event will be held at ‘Wando Cheongjeong Market,’ Wando-gun’s specialty product shopping mall, and from the 20th to the 31st, a special price event will be conducted through the Post Office shopping mall.
A county official said, “We will continue to strive to develop domestic and international markets to promote abalone consumption and constantly seek ways to stabilize and develop the abalone industry.”
Wando abalone grows by feeding on kelp and seaweed from the clean sea, is rich in various vitamins, iron, calcium, potassium, and protein, and is called the ‘Ginseng of the Sea.’ Its tender and soft flesh makes it the best health food for people of all ages.
