Yeosu Geobukseon Park Lake, Reborn as a Pleasant Healing Retreat
Large-scale Water Quality Improvement Project Promotion
Population Control and Water Purification of Carp and Cheonggeobuk (Korean Pond Turtle)
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) is set to transform Geobukseon Park into a pleasant urban healing retreat by launching a large-scale water quality improvement project for the park's lake.
According to the city, the increase in the population of carp and pond turtles in the Geobukseon Park lake has caused water turbidity due to their excretions, and green algae blooms and odors are expected during the summer.
In response, the city secured an additional budget of 130 million KRW this year and plans to carry out the lake water quality improvement project by June after collecting sediment samples from the lake and analyzing them with input from water quality experts.
The plan includes reducing the number of fish species that exacerbate water pollution and introducing a water purification system within the lake to continuously remove pollutants, aiming for fundamental water quality improvement.
A city official stated, “While promptly implementing this water quality improvement project, we hope citizens will enjoy rest and various activities in a more pleasant environment through annual water replacement and cleaning of the lake.”
