Changwon Special City, Event for Selecting 'Best Department for Correct Event Name Usage' Targeting All Departments
How about 'Nongsanmul Iryeok Chujeok·Gwanrije' instead of 'Farm to Table'?
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam selects the ‘Department Excelling in Proper Use of Event Names’ to discourage the use of foreign languages and loanwords in event names and slogans, and to promote the use of easy-to-understand Korean.
Local government event names (project names) such as ‘GSAT 2024 Startup Convergence League,’ ‘Hydrogen Mobility Roadshow,’ and ‘Smart Fish Farm,’ which mix loanwords and foreign languages, have been criticized for being difficult and inaccurate, causing confusion among citizens.
In response, on the occasion of King Sejong the Great’s birthday on the 15th, the city encourages all departments and townships to use Korean event names to promote the correct use of Korean among public officials. Starting this year, the Public Relations Officer, responsible for language promotion, plans to receive submissions of Changwon City event names (projects and policies), banners, slogans, and promotional materials using Korean throughout 2024, and will hold an evaluation and award ceremony in October.
Last year, the city conducted lectures on writing citizen-tailored press releases and using easy Korean for employees while visiting the main office and five district offices, and also held events such as the ‘Hangul Day Staff Korean Language Competition.’

Choi Jeong-gyu, the Public Relations Officer, said, “We planned this event in strong agreement with citizens’ voices that policy or project names using foreign languages, technical terms, and abbreviations are difficult to understand,” adding, “I hope this will be an opportunity for all Changwon City employees to think from the citizens’ perspective when naming events and projects.”
