More than 60 people, including employees from Hyosung, Hyosung TNC, Hyosung Advanced Materials, Hyosung Heavy Industries, and Hyosung Chemical, as well as Wando-gun officials, the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA) Namhae Headquarters, and residents of Donggo-ri fishing village, directly transplanted 2,000 Zostera marina plants for creating a sea forest on the 9th. Zostera marina is a type of seagrass that serves as a spawning ground and habitat for many marine organisms and is recognized internationally as blue carbon. Additionally, a beach cleanup activity was conducted to collect trash discarded in the sea.
Sea Planting Day is observed annually on May 10th to prevent desertification of the sea by planting seaweed underwater and to combat climate change and marine environmental pollution. Since 2013, South Korea has been the first country in the world to designate this as a national commemorative day.
On the 8th of last month, Hyosung signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Wando-gun and FIRA Namhae Headquarters for "carbon neutrality and sustainable marine ecosystem conservation," agreeing to plant Zostera marina and seaweed over an area of 1.59㎢ in the Donggo-ri sea area to provide habitats for various marine life. In May of last year, Hyosung also signed an MOU with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency to expand sea forest blue carbon.
