On the 2nd, Gyeonggi Province held a large forum on the theme of introducing ‘Opportunity Income for Farmers and Fishermen’ at the Gyeonggi Provincial Council’s main conference room, attended by about 100 experts, farmers, fishermen, and related parties.
Opportunity Income is a flagship policy of Gyeonggi Province’s 8th elected administration, providing income compensation for a certain period to those who create value in society but are not adequately rewarded.
Last year, Gyeonggi Province began providing Opportunity Income to people with severe disabilities and artists, and this year, the target group will be expanded to include farmers, fishermen, and athletes.
The Opportunity Income for farmers and fishermen will provide approximately 17,700 farmers and fishermen in the province, including young farmers and fishermen (under 50 years old), returnee farmers and fishermen (those who have returned to farming or fishing within the last five years), and environmentally certified farmers and fishermen (certified for eco-friendliness, animal welfare, premium seafood, etc.), with 150,000 KRW per month and 1.8 million KRW annually in local currency.
Earlier, to introduce Opportunity Income for farmers and fishermen, Gyeonggi Province started with an expert seminar in February, followed by a briefing session in March to encourage participation and strengthen cooperation among cities and counties regarding the Opportunity Income project for farmers and fishermen.
This large forum was organized to spread consensus on Opportunity Income for farmers and fishermen and to ensure smooth project implementation.
Oh Byeong-kwon, the First Deputy Governor of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "To respond to the crisis of rural extinction and improve the quality of life for farmers and fishermen, we will promote the Opportunity Income support project focusing on young farmers and fishermen, returnee farmers and fishermen, and environmentally certified farmers and fishermen." He added, "Through this forum, we aim to derive implementation plans for the project and ask for the cooperation of all related parties to make it a successful initiative."
Gyeonggi Province plans to collect opinions from related experts, farmers and fishermen, and city and county officials through this forum, and based on these, establish policies that provide better opportunities for farmers and fishermen and promote sustainable development of rural areas.
