Gwangju City Selected for Ministry of the Interior and Safety's 'Outdoor Advertising Revenue Support Project'
Secured Over 560 Million Won in National Funds
Support Including Expansion of Banner Posting
Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kang Ki-jung) announced on the 1st that it has secured approximately 560 million KRW in national funding after being selected for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s ‘Outdoor Advertising Revenue Support Project.’
The supported projects include ▲expansion of general banner display stands ▲expansion of priority display stands for political banners ▲expansion of public electronic display stands ▲and support for banner recycling projects.
By expanding general banner display stands, the city plans to increase opportunities for posting both commercial and administrative banners.
Since January, Gwangju has conducted special crackdowns on illegal banners, significantly reducing illegal commercial banners. However, due to concerns about the lack of banner posting locations, the city continues to expand banner display stands.
The number of political banner display stands will also be increased. According to the amendment of the Outdoor Advertising Act, each political party can voluntarily post two party banners per neighborhood, but local politicians must use designated banner display stands. Accordingly, to guarantee political activities, the city plans to proceed with the expansion of political banner display stands.
Gwangju will also increase public electronic display stands. This is expected to respond to the rapidly changing advertising system with digital advertising and contribute to the city’s aesthetics.
The city supports the recycling of banners and other advertising materials. The goal is to reduce single-use waste by recycling the overflowing discarded banners in various ways. Existing banner recycling projects involved recycling wood or turning discarded banners into bags. Starting this year, the strategy is to produce more marketable recycled products with high usability, such as eco-bags.

Park Geum-hwa, Director of the Architecture and Landscape Division, said, “We will address the fundamental issues of illegal advertisements not just through simple maintenance and crackdowns but also by expanding display stands, and contribute to Gwangju’s carbon neutrality through the banner recycling project.”
