MS "Building AI Hub in London... Close Collaboration with OpenAI"
Microsoft announced on the 8th (local time) that it will build a new artificial intelligence (AI) hub in London, UK, in collaboration with OpenAI.
MS stated, "AI London will advance cutting-edge language models and supporting infrastructure, and promote the development of world-class tools necessary for foundational models," adding, "To this end, MS's internal AI team and OpenAI will work closely together."
This AI hub construction is part of a program that MS is pursuing with an investment of ?2.5 billion (approximately 4.3 trillion KRW) aimed at data center infrastructure and the advancement of AI technology in the UK. Although details such as the scale of the AI hub and the number of engineers have not been disclosed, AI engineer Jordan Hoffman, formerly of DeepMind, has taken the lead.
Jordan Hoffman recently joined MS through its aggressive IT talent acquisition efforts. Last month, MS also recruited Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and CEO of Inflection, as its AI head.
According to major foreign media, when MS hired Suleyman, it also employed most of the Inflection staff who followed him. This led to criticism that MS effectively absorbed the company without going through formal M&A procedures to avoid legal regulations. Hoffman was revealed to be among those employees.
Suleyman leads "MS AI," which is responsible for AI research and development including MS's AI chatbot Copilot, and reportedly reports directly to MS CEO Satya Nadella. Suleyman said, "We will post new job openings in the coming weeks or months to find new talent to join Hoffman's AI hub."
