The Jeonnam Regional Headquarters of the Korea Rural Community Corporation (Director Jo Young-ho) announced on the 2nd that it will conduct a basic survey on three districts selected in the Jeonnam area among the seven nationwide districts chosen this year by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs for the reservoir water quality improvement project.

The seven districts targeted for this year's basic survey of the reservoir water quality improvement project are Taean, Chungnam; Boryeong, Chungnam; Gochang, Jeonbuk; Changwon, Gyeongnam; Yeonggwang, Jeonnam; Haenam, Jeonnam; and Sinan, Jeonnam.
The three selected districts are Bongdeok Reservoir (Yeonggwang) and Hwawon 2 Reservoir (Haenam), managed by the Corporation, and Bongdong Reservoir, managed by Sinan County. A basic survey for the improvement project will be conducted throughout this year.
The "Reservoir Water Quality Improvement Project" is a project that improves the water quality of agricultural reservoirs by installing environmentally friendly water purification facilities such as sedimentation ponds and artificial wetlands, as well as facilities to block pollutant inflow, thereby creating a pleasant rural environment.
A sedimentation pond is a pond created to clarify water by allowing suspended solids such as soil or sand mixed in the water to settle.
Upon completion of the project, it will be possible to supply cleaner agricultural water to a total of 282 hectares of farmland around the reservoirs, which is expected to bring various benefits such as safe agricultural product production and environmental improvement.
The Jeonnam Headquarters plans to maximize the project’s effectiveness by cooperating with upstream residents and local governments in efforts to reduce pollution sources, as improving once-contaminated water quality requires significant costs and efforts, in connection with the water quality improvement project.
Director Jo Young-ho said, “Cultivating clean water is the starting point for producing eco-friendly, high-quality, and safe food, so it is very important in Jeonnam, a region producing clean agricultural products. We will do our best to establish a foundation for managing a clear and pleasant water quality environment through the water quality improvement project, water quality monitoring networks, and strengthening algae bloom response and surveillance activities.”
