Forest authorities extinguished a wildfire that occurred in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Inje-gun, Gangwon Province.
According to forest authorities on the 31st, the wildfire broke out around 12:14 PM in Gajeon-ri, Seohwa-myeon, Inje-gun, Gangwon Province, within the DMZ. The forest authorities deployed two helicopters and reported that the fire was extinguished around 4 PM.
The fire area is located 410 meters south of the Military Demarcation Line and is known to be 1.2 km away from the nearest frontline Guard Post (GP).
The damaged area is estimated by the Korea Forest Service helicopters to be about 5,000 square meters, and the exact scale is under investigation.

According to military sources, the military notified the North through the United Nations Command that forest authority helicopters would enter the DMZ to extinguish the wildfire. South and North Korea have maintained three communication channels, including the Panmunjom channel and the East and West Sea military communication lines, but since North Korea suddenly stopped responding to calls on April 7 last year, communication has been cut off for nearly a year.
