Masters Participation Qualification... 'Strict'
Host Augusta National Limits Participation to 20 Players
Eligibility Includes Past Champions and Major Winners from Last 5 Years
Amateurs Favored, Special Invitees Also Allowed
The Masters, known as the "Hall of Fame" tournament, is the "stage of dreams." It is a major championship that every player wants to compete in at least once. The best players showcase legendary matches in the best environment. However, the entry conditions are strict. Not just anyone can step onto Augusta National Golf Club. Usually, major tournaments have about 156 players. In contrast, the Masters has relatively fewer players, under 100. The highest number was 109 in 1962, and since 1966, it has never exceeded 100. In the 1985 tournament, only 77 players participated.
To compete in the Masters, players must meet one of the 20 entry criteria set by the host, Augusta National Golf Club. Past Masters champions receive a lifetime invitation. This year’s Masters, opening on April 11, includes defending champion Jon Rahm (Spain), as well as Fred Couples, Jordan Spieth (both USA), Hideki Matsuyama (Japan), and Adam Scott (Australia), who have all received invitations. The "Golf Emperor" Tiger Woods (USA), who has worn the Green Jacket five times, is also expected to participate.
Among LIV Golf players, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed (all USA), Sergio Garcia (Spain), and Charl Schwartzel (South Africa) have qualified as past champions. Some past champions will not participate; there are 17 such players. ?ngel Cabrera (Argentina), Nick Faldo (England), Bernhard Langer (Germany), Tom Watson, Mark O'Meara (both USA), and Trevor Immelman (South Africa) have all declined to compete.
Players who have won major championships such as The Open, US Open, and PGA Championship in the last five years will also compete. This includes Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Gary Woodland (all USA), and Cameron Smith (Australia). Winners of The Players Championship, known as the "fifth major," earn a three-year invitation.
Top finishers from last year’s major tournaments, winners of PGA Tour events in the past year, and players ranked within the top 50 in the world rankings as of year-end or April 7 also receive Masters invitations. Augusta National also considers amateur players. The 1st and 2nd place finishers of the 2023 US Amateur Championship, British Amateur Champion, Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion, Latin America Amateur Champion, and US Mid-Amateur Champion are all eligible to showcase their shots at the Masters. The current Olympic gold medalist will also participate.
Adam Schenk, Eric Cole, and Denny McCarthy (all USA) will make their Masters debut. Augusta National Golf Club also issues special invitations. This year, Joaquin Niemann (Chile), Thorbirn Olesen (Denmark), and Ryo Hisatsune (Japan), who are performing well in LIV Golf, were invited as special players. Winners of the PGA Tour Texas Children’s Houston Open and Valero Texas Open, held before the Masters, will also join as the last entrants.
