Baekseok University Opens Calligraphy Works of Independence Activist O Sechang to the Public
Vice President Lee Jae-bok of Mongolhure Information and Communication University Donates to Baekseok University
Calligraphy works, personal belongings of independence activist Wi Chang Oh Se-chang, will be made available to the public.
On the 28th, Baekseok University received a donation of Oh's calligraphy works and other items from Vice President Lee Jae-bok of Mongolia Hure Information and Communication University at the Jinri Hall University Innovation Committee Chairman's Office.
Oh, who signed the Korean Declaration of Independence as one of the 33 national representatives during the March 1st Movement, was also active as a calligrapher and journalist.
Among the donated items, a calligraphy piece featuring the character ‘화목할 화 (和)’ meaning harmony draws particular attention. Experts analyze that this work conveys the meaning that ‘all citizens must achieve independence through united strength’ as well as the idea that ‘husbands and wives should live harmoniously.’
Additionally, Vice President Lee donated poetry collections including Kim Sowol’s Mot Ijeo (1962), Noh Cheon-myeong’s Saseum-ui Norae (1958), and Kim Yoon-sik’s Ajik-eun Che-nyeom-hal Su Eomneun Kkado (1960).
Vice President Lee said, “I recently had the opportunity to visit Baekseok University and was deeply impressed by how the university has established various museums to preserve our precious cultural heritage. Especially, seeing the exhibition hall dedicated to Yu Gwan-sun inside the museum made me think that displaying Oh Se-chang’s works together would be very meaningful, which led me to decide to donate.”
