Evolution of Korea Elevator Safety Corporation's Smart Control Platform... Enhanced Public Safety Detection
Remote Safety Information Management Using 4th Industrial Revolution Technologies
Smart Control Platform Registers 200,000 Elevators
Chairman Lee Yong-pyo "Expanding Support for Public Safety"
#. Last December, at the Kintex exhibition center in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, a man in his 30s lost consciousness and collapsed while riding an elevator alone. The elevator smart control platform detected this and reported it to 119, enabling rapid emergency response. In January, a man in his 70s suddenly collapsed in an elevator at Daegu Subway Line 2 station, but the smart control platform detected it, and the station staff reported it to 119, resulting in a swift hospital transfer.
The smart control platform of the Korea Elevator Safety Agency (KoELSA) is evolving. The system developed and implemented by the agency not only responds quickly to various emergency situations occurring in elevators but also influences related industries.
The elevator smart control platform is a safety net that integrates Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as AI (Artificial Intelligence), IoT (Internet of Things), GIS (Geographic Information System), and over 3 billion elevator safety data records to enable remote maintenance management. This system consists of ▲ IoT-based intelligent safety devices such as emergency situation detection and video-based emergency call functions ▲ GIS-based elevator control system capable of online report reception, risk situation monitoring, and situation dissemination ▲ mobile-based situation dissemination system for receiving response messages and broadcasting progress at each stage.
Since its establishment and operation began in 2023, the elevator smart control platform currently has about 200,000 registered elevators. The intelligent IoT safety device 'Safety Hub,' which automatically detects risk situations such as assault or collapse, is installed in 430 elevators in subway stations, public facilities, and more.
Recently, interest in crime prevention inside elevators has increased, and participation from public and private sectors wishing for remote maintenance is growing. It is expected that more than 1,000 devices will be additionally introduced this year.
The agency has signed business agreements with 27 organizations, including Incheon Transit Corporation, to introduce and operate the elevator smart control platform service. At the 2023 Korea Government Expo, it was selected as a representative case in the safe society sector and introduced through a national report conference.

Going forward, to improve the operational efficiency of small and medium-sized elevator companies, the agency plans to install and operate integrated control rooms based on the smart control platform for call centers currently operated by each company. This is expected to contribute to the development of the elevator industry by alleviating manpower shortages and reducing costs. Director Lee Yong-pyo stated, "The elevator smart control platform project is a core task that meets not only our agency’s vision but also the demands of the current government and the public. We will spare no effort to support the continuous expansion of the smart control platform for public safety and the development of the elevator industry."
