"Unable to Swallow Saliva Due to Neck Muscle Paralysis"…American Woman Suffers Severe Side Effects After Botox Injection
"Neck Muscles Paralyzed, Unable to Lift Head"
A story has emerged from the United States about a woman who experienced paralysis of her neck muscles after receiving Botox to alleviate migraine symptoms.
Foreign media outlets such as the Daily Mail introduced the story of Alicia Hallock (36), a mother of three who has been receiving Botox treatments for migraines for five years. She reportedly visited the same neurology clinic every three months for Botox injections over the five-year period. However, after her last Botox treatment last month, she experienced unusual side effects.
Hallock revealed that her neck muscles were partially paralyzed after receiving the Botox injection. On her Instagram on the 17th of last month, Hallock said, "I developed a rare complication. The Botox has spread to my neck muscles, causing many problems." She added, "My neck muscles are almost paralyzed, and I cannot lift my head." She also said that due to the complication, she was unable to swallow water or saliva.
Medical staff suspected botulinum poisoning. Generally, botulinum poisoning is caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria when canned food is improperly sterilized, with a fatality rate of 5 to 10%. If poisoned, muscle paralysis can last for several weeks, and paralysis of respiratory muscles can be especially fatal. Hallock said, "The doctor had treated botulinum poisoning caused by food before, but said this was the first time seeing such a case caused by Botox injections."
Fortunately, Hallock was discharged after 18 days of hospitalization but has not fully recovered. She said, "People experience Botox complications and may have some or all of the symptoms I am experiencing. However, cases as severe and with as many symptoms as mine are extremely rare. That is why the hospital is conducting a case study on this unusual situation I have experienced."

Dermatologist Lindsey Zubritsky said, "Botox is considered safe and effective for most people," adding, "Rarely, if Botox is injected incorrectly, it can cause heaviness, drooping of the eyebrows, or unwanted asymmetry at the injection site."
