View original imageOn the 20th (local time), the New York Post reported the miraculous experience of a man identified only as Steven (36) from Texas. In 2022, Steven suffered this ordeal after forcibly trying to pluck an ingrown hair in his groin. An ingrown hair is a hair that grows inward beneath the skin instead of emerging outside. It causes various inflammations and itching, making removal necessary.
Steven became infected with bacteria from this incident and was diagnosed with sepsis at the end of 2022. Sepsis is an immune response to various toxins that causes inflammation throughout the body, leading to organ dysfunction in the ▲liver ▲lungs ▲kidneys ▲brain, and other organs. As the condition worsened, he fell into septic shock, showing symptoms such as acute respiratory distress and pneumonia. When he arrived at the hospital, the sepsis symptoms had already reached his heart, and doctors declared surgery impossible. Later, doctors diagnosed Steven as brain dead and estimated his survival rate at about 4%. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 270,000 people die from sepsis annually in the United States.
However, Steven underwent heart surgery and treatment to remove fluid from his heart and lungs for a month while in a coma. After extensive treatment, he was able to wake from the coma. It is said that he regained consciousness without the feared brain damage. Last year, he had almost fully recovered to the point where he could speak.
Steven’s treatment and recovery process gained attention after his younger sister Michelle shared it on the social media platform TikTok. Recent posts showed Steven walking, talking, and smiling, receiving support from netizens.

If you want to remove an ingrown hair, it is better to visit a dermatologist and follow a doctor’s prescription rather than removing it yourself like Steven. Self-removal can cause wounds and infections. Dermatologists remove hair by destroying hair follicles with laser hair removal or using sterilized medical instruments.
