"Thank You for Your Spirit of Service and Sacrifice" ... Changwon Special City Holds Volunteer Fire Brigade Day Ceremony
On the 21st, Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam held the '3rd Volunteer Fire Brigade Day' event at Galjeon Sports Ground in Daesan-myeon, Uichang-gu.
The commemorative ceremony, marking its third year, was attended by about 1,000 people including Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, members of the National Assembly, provincial councilors, city councilors, and volunteer firefighters.
The event began with an opening video, followed by awards for exemplary volunteer firefighters, commemorative and congratulatory speeches to encourage the members, and then a sports competition to foster unity among the volunteer firefighters.
Volunteer Fire Brigade Day was established in 2021 to commemorate the history of the volunteer fire brigades and honor their spirit of service and sacrifice. It was officially designated on March 19, combining March 11, 1958?the date the 'Fire Services Act,' which provides the legal basis for volunteer fire brigades, was enacted?and the emergency number 119.
The Changwon Volunteer Fire Brigade consists of 1,814 members across 55 teams. These members are local residents who engage in their regular occupations while assisting with firefighting duties such as fire suppression, rescue, and first aid.
Kim Young-gi, President of the Changwon Volunteer Fire Brigade Association, said, "It is truly an honor to hold this event to raise the pride of volunteer firefighters and honor their noble spirit," adding, "We will take the lead in making Changwon a central city in Northeast Asia and a safe central city."
